The beachfront has been rebuilt over the last decade and the suburb now carries a good number of apartment buildings, along with the restaurants, bars and shops around the Scarborough Beach strip.

Scarborough buildings deal with salt, sand and a lot of foot traffic. Sand travels in on feet from the beach and gets walked through foyers, lifts and corridors, so entry matting and a tight vacuuming cycle do more here than almost anywhere else we work. Salt sits on glass, balustrades and door hardware.

The Rendezvous, formerly Observation City, has stood on the beachfront since the 1980s, and the City of Stirling has since set a height limit of eight storeys, which is why so much of the newer development along West Coast Highway and Scarborough Beach Road runs to mid rise apartment buildings rather than towers. Around Brighton Road, Drabble Road and Pearl Parade there is a mix of older blocks and newer complexes. A building distance from the water changes its schedule as much as its size does.

Scarborough runs on a weekend and summer rhythm. Parking near the beach is gone by mid morning on a warm Saturday, and the common areas of a beachfront building take more traffic in one weekend than a suburban block takes in a month. We schedule beachside buildings early and lift the frequency on entry points, glass and outdoor areas over summer. Venues along the strip are cleaned outside trading hours, which usually means very early.
